Suzhou Jinji Lake MTR

Location: Suzhou, China
Client: SIPAC Planning Bureau
Size: 500 m2
Type: Subway entrance structures
Scope: Concept design through construction documentation
Status: Built 2011

Located at the eastern terminus of the Suzhou Central Business District, the MTR entrance structures mark the gateway and axis linking the new Downtown with the Jinji Lake waterfront. The pair of angular canopies takes on an abstract sculptural quality, suggestive of birds poised to take flight. Viewed from the subway below, the structures appear more diaphanous. The suspended lattice surfaces of the canopy are oriented to accentuate the sense of light and form, reinforcing the experience of arrival and passage.
