Chongqing’s hilly topography has always been one of the defining features of this city’s unique urban character. Located on the banks of the fast developing Jiangbei CBD, the site’s dramatic 36-meter drop overlooks impressive views of the skyline and a public waterfront below, which is increasingly isolated by development pressures in the area. By splitting the office program into two conjoined towers with a narrow slot in the middle, the design creates a pedestrian passage that steps down the façade of the building, providing a continuous outdoor commercial promenade. The resulting eroded form promotes interaction of workers with their surroundings through increased natural daylight and outdoor terraces, along with architectural facades calibrated to minimize direct sunlight and increase natural ventilation.
